A Song to the Beloved

As we approach the Month of Elul - Virgo, we receive the 13 petalled rose of the Shekhinach. Elul -Virgo is seen as the last - first month of the year in the Hebrew calendar and within the Biblical and Ancient Egyptian Astrology, Virgo marks the beginning of the new zodiacal year.

The month of Elul is about returning to our truest selves and to Alaha. It's a time of alignment, a homecoming of the soul. It's an understanding that every action, word, and thought carries a cosmic weight and that we have the power to recalibrate our destiny through sincere return.

During the month of Elul, Alaha, metaphorically the King, leaves His-Her lofty palace and enters the field to meet Humanity. This implies a closeness, a direct link to the Divine that's more readily available. It's an auspicious time for prayers and connection.

The Aramaic - Hebrew letters that spell "Elul" (Alef-Lamed-Vav-Lamed) are said to be an acronym for the phrase "Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li" from the Song of Songs, meaning "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine." This encapsulates the intimate, loving relationship between Alaha and Humanity.

The Song of Songs and its Mystical Meaning The Song of Songs, often referred to as the Song of Solomon, is one of the most enigmatic and deeply poetic books in the Sacred Scripture. On the surface, it appears to be a dialogue of passionate love between two lovers. However, throughout history, scholars and spiritual seekers have unearthed layers of metaphorical and mystical meanings embedded within its verses.

  1. Union with the Divine: One prevailing interpretation, particularly within Jewish and Christian mystical traditions, is that the Song of Songs represents the love relationship between Alaha and humanity. The male lover represents ALaha or the Divine, and the female lover symbolizes the human soul or the collective Humanity. Their ardent longing and pursuit of each other symbolize the soul's yearning for union with the Divine and Alaha's reciprocal longing for communion with humanity.

  2. The Journey of the Soul: The alternating voices and emotions in the verses—ranging from longing and seeking to union and separation—reflect the soul's journey through life, its challenges, its moments of spiritual connection, and the inevitable periods of feeling distant from the Divine.

  3. Elevation of Human Love: The very human, very physical love described is not rejected or diminished; instead, it's elevated. By placing such passionate love poetry in sacred scripture, the message is clear: human love, in its purest form, mirrors divine love. This idea breaks away from traditions that see the body and its desires as inherently sinful or distracting from spiritual pursuits.

  4. The Feminine Aspect of the Divine: Particularly in Jewish mysticism or Kabbalah, the Song of Songs also resonates with the concept of the Shekhinah, the divine feminine emanation of Alaha. The yearning, merging, and occasional distancing reflect the dance between the different sefirot (emanations) in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, especially between Tiferet (often associated with the male/divine) and Malkhut (often associated with the female/Shekhinah).

  5. Path to Enlightenment: This sacred poem can also be seen as a guide or map to spiritual enlightenment. The gardens, spices, and various natural elements mentioned have been interpreted as stages or landmarks on a mystic's path to spiritual awakening and union.

The beauty of the Song of Songs lies in its layers. Whether you chooses to see it as a celebration of human love, a guide to spiritual union, or both, experiencing the holiness of these sacred words is always a coming home. Its lasting appeal may be its ability to reflect our own deepest longings, both human and divine, and to remind us that the journey of love, in all its forms, is a sacred one.
